9-2-2009 Hello and welcome to What’s happening. This week’s show should be a lot quiter since the tree is down. Davey tree service did a great job of removing the gigantic dead pine. Enjoy the three day weekend and hopefully you’ll hit some of the fun activities planned around Cambria or your local community. This is What’s Happening and I am your host Lee Anne. Today I would like to say goodbye to an old friend who passed away recently, Wilfred Lyons. Wilfred lived across the street from The Tea Cozy on Bridge street. We always said hello across the fence and admired each other’s gardens, I was particularly envious of his roses since mine kept getting eaten by the deer. As the years passed Wilfred invited me inside his charming craftsman bungalow to share conversation about what interested us now and he allowed me to participate in a living history program. Wilfred would tell me all about the history of the town, which houses he had lived, what is was like to work for the Hearst Family, and the Soto family. I learned how much he loved his wife Hazel and how important his family was to him. When I had my daughter seven years ago he enjoyed her company too. After Katy started walking Wilfred extended an invitation to us to play on his lawn, help the garden grow and pick apples in the fall. Katy just loved him and so did I. She would walk across the street, holding my hand and then want to open the gate by herself, walk up to the front door and knock waiting for Wilfred to answer. He had a lot of patience for both of us. Well Wilfred, goodbye, we’ll miss you but you are part of our living history now and we won’t forget you. There will be a display honoring Wilfred Lyons at the Cambria historical museum on Burton and Center Streets in the East Village of Cambria beginning this Friday. Hours are noon until 3pm. I am your host Lee Anne. I hope you all had a wonderful mother’s day weekend. I was so busy I didn’t get to any of the events I had planned on attending. I fell asleep on the couch, sitting up while waiting for my husband to come home so we could attend the newest Pewter Plough Playhouse play, so that was a bust. Then, we had planned to see Ruth Fleming’s new works at the Friends Gallery on Saturday but got home so late it wasn’t even worth changing to go out again. I did host two young ladies from Azuza Pacific University Saturday and Sunday nights. They were just beginning a two week Choir tour and their first stop was the First Baptist Church here in Cambria. What a treat it was to hear them. I especially enjoyed it when they encircled the sanctuary and sang in the round. Also, I heeded my girlfriends advice and headed off to the day spa at the Hamlet. I really enjoyed the massage Nancy gave me and recommend her to all of you with aching bodies. Sometimes a rigorous day a work or too much gardening can leave you stiff and uncomfortable. She’ll have you fixed up in no time. So, this week I want you all to listen as I tell you about The Painted Lily, Cambria’s newest artist gallery. What makes this an interesting opening is the people involved in the creation of this new space. The Painted Lily is located at 2026 Main Street, next door to The Garden Shed and right in front of Lily’s coffee house. Four artists, Mary Anderson, Lucia Capacchione, Sheila Hollingshead and Tim Mayer opened this co-op which will include guest artists, gallery programming, small workshops, talks, book signings and who knows what else. Three of the four artists are seniors and they are investing their social security rebate into this business. That’s right, they are taking their rebate money and putting into our community. I’d say they are certainly an inspiration. So I’d love to see us all make time to support this little group. Their official grand opening is Memorial Day weekend, so if you are out and about, stop by The Painted Lily on Main Street, here in Cambria. Also the twenty first brings Kings Christian to Cambria. Both game times are at 330pm. If you have a child in grammar school, like I do, remember we have early release days next week along with scheduled parent teacher conferences. I’ve been following the latest debate between the Cambria Health District and the CCSD. Right before elections last November I aired a series of interviews with candidates for both departments and brought up the possible need for a closer working relationship. I couldn’t understand why the fire department and the ambulance department didn’t share housing, facilities and equipment. I thought how convenient and practical it would be. Also, it might provide an opportunity for the CHD to actually provide services as a healthcare district. Neither side seemed too interested in combining forces and in fact it seemed to have more to do with real estate than community needs anyway. Now they are squabbling about equipment that both districts would like to use. Doesn’t that make the suggestion to combine these areas even more pertinent? Eventually, I would love to see Cambria have one site where response vehicles were activated from. One site open 24 hours a day for minor medical situations that didn’t require dispatching. One site introducing health care fairs, where tests, vaccinations, basic check ups and healthy care information could be provided free of charge to the community once or twice a year. One site. One cohesive department that could take care of our small villages health and safety needs. What do you think? Send your thoughts to me. April 8 2009 Hello, This is What’s Happening and I am Lee Anne. With Easter just a few days away I want to make sure you know at least a couple of places to take the kids for easter egg hunting. After speaking with the official press secretary for the Easter Bunny I’ve learned that he’ll definitely be visiting Shamel Park in Cambria. You and your kids should arrive early enough to park and find a place at the start mark for an eight am send off. There will be a special area for the children who are two years old and younger. Ambassadors for the Bunny will be greeting all with Balloons and prizes galore. After much discussion about the weather and hopping patterns I also learned that there will be guaranteed eggs to hunt in Nipomo at The City Church. Now the Bunny was afraid to disturb Easter Sunday services so he’ll hop on down to the church on Saturday. You should be there just before 1pm. Where is there? 604 Frontage Road in Nipomo. Phone the Kropps, who are the senior pastors at 929-8990 if you need directions. Anyway, the Easter Bunny’s press secretary said the Bunny won’t miss the many front and back gardens waiting for him. Also, he loves to hide the hand painted eggs the best. So happy Easter egg hunting to all. All of your local churches have wonderful services planned for Sunday, many of them beginning around 10 or 10:30 in the morning so there’s plenty of time to attend one. Are you looking for something fun to do with your children or grandchildren on Saturday. It can be awfully hard for the little ones to wait for the Easter Bunny to arrive on Sunday morning. So, why don’t you get out of the house on Saturday and have a little fun. The Children’s Day in the Plaza is from ten am until 3pm in the San Luis Obispo Mission Plaza. This fun day allows children to learn about science, health, art and have fun. There will be activities, food bounces houses, a children’s farmers market and much more. In fact, Katy my daughter should be there performing with the Central Coast Gymnastics so if you go down look for her, she’ll be chaperoned by papjim. April 15 2009 Hello and welcome to What’s Happening. I am your host Lee Anne. I hope the Easter weekend was all you wanted it to be. The easter bunny certainly had fun leaving eggs for Katy to find. Her basket was so full. This was the first year without my son, Corbin, who is now at university in San Francisco. I had one incredibly bad day where I just moped around because my little baby was all grown up. I did give him a chocolate easter bunny when I saw him last and he accepted it with a big hug, which I am grateful for, because you never know if you are just being a silly mum when you give your grown children things like that. I had an easter basket waiting for me at my parents house until my son was born. I loved it. It was always a See’s basket. I wouldn’t mind getting one now either. Shall we see what’s going on around town? I was hoping for a few more children’s events this week, what with the kids off from school. We did take a trip down to Margarita Lake. That was fun. I think I’d like to go back for a camping trip this summer. They have nice camping areas away from the RV stalls and a swimming pool that’s open after memorial day too! They also accept reservations which is nice since I have a spot picked out already. If you are a fan of the swing music we play here at KTEA you should go to the SLO swingout. Wash your hands whenever you can and keep your home, car and work environment clean. I thought about volunteering to clean my daughter’s classroom this week but didn’t know if it might be taken the wrong way. What do you think? Do you think I’m over reacting? Or should I try to do this. If you don’t work at a restaurant like I do you may not think about wiping all your work surfaces down during and at the end of the day but I think it is a good idea, particularly if you are handling money or share your work space with other people. They sell spray bottles of sanitizing liquid at the grocery and hardware stores. At The Tea Cozy everything gets a wipe down with a mild bleach and water solution between guests. Old time radio for the central coast. January 6 2009 Welcome to What’s Happening. I am your host Lee Anne. Before we get started with the show today I want to send my condolences out to the parents whose children passed in a car accident early Sunday January 4. Both Nik and Darac were involved in coast union high school sports which we broadcast here on the radio. I didn’t get to see any games but still felt a connection with them as their names became familiar to me through Jon Fitzrandolph’s play by play announcing. For the last week, each time I pass the makeshift memorial on Burton and Highway one I am overcome with a painful twist of the heart as I think of the loss of both sets of parents. I have an eighteen year old who graduated last year from Coast Union. He’s not always the best about telling me where he is and who he is with but I love him so much, there is a blank spot in my heart and brain where I can’t even begin to contemplate what life would be like without him. I’m thankful he is here, home for winter break, and a few extra hugs do a lot to heal. They are free. Give them out to anyone you think might need one. Hugs feel good.
